Blister, Skin and Clamshell Packaging: The Carded Packaging

You may have heard about the carded packaging. There are three categories of this type of packaging. Those three categories are known as skin, blister, and clamshell. These are basically the three different types of packaging supplies which are used across the world.

These packaging supplies have their applications in the endless scenarios involving a wide range of products which may include items from fishing supplies to hardware and from pharmaceuticals to arts and crafts. However, it is worth keeping in mind that not every category is ‘one-size-fits-all’. Different packaging supplies are appropriate for different kinds of items.

In the remaining part of this article, we will discuss the basics of all three types of packaging supplies.

Skin packaging

Skin packaging is the type of carded packaging that involves application of slim plastic sheet to cover the item placed on a corrugated cardboard sheet. The plastic sheet is a clear plastic through which you can see the other side.

Usually, the cardboard has a heat-seal coating but it is not quite mandatory in every case.Heat is used for the softening of plastic substrate and then this substrate is placed on the item. Vacuum sealing may be used to ensure tight fitting.

The looks and feel of the skin packaging is not quite different from blister packaging. However, the major difference is that the plastic on the skin package takes the shape of the item.

Blister packaging

Blister packaging is the pre-formed packaging which is used for the items such as medicines, consumer goods and certain types of perishables.

The thermoformed plastic is used for the formation of a pocket which is closed with the help of a backer made of plastic substrate, paperboard or aluminum foil. The product is contained inside the pocket and the backer seals the package completely.

The best thing about this packaging technique is that it tends to protect the items from external threats which may lead to the damage. Opaque blister packs are also used for the products which are not supposed to be exposed to UV rays and lights.

Clamshell Packaging

Among other types of carded packaging, clamshell packaging is very easy to use. As the name suggests, this packaging is composed of two identical shells which are closed in the same way a shell is closed. This packaging is composed of plastic which can be one of different types such as polystyrene, polyester, or PVC.This packaging is great for the packaging of perishable foods which are consumed on daily basis.
